School gardens are key to ending hunger in the classroom.
Hunger can prevent students from making the most of a formal education, no matter how hard they try to ignore its effects. The sad truth is that hunger can have physical and psychological effects that make learning substantially difficult. Public elementary school children in Africa, perform poorly in National Proficiency Exams for various reasons and as a result these children are not allowed to continue their education. One major reason these children do not do well in primary school is that they are hungry. Frankly, many of them are starving.
Maggie Kay Foundation was formalized in 2016 to establish sustainable school gardens to provide school meals to underprivileged students in Public elementary school children in Africa. We establish school gardens where the children plant the seeds, water and nurture the vegetables and harvest their crop. We use vertical gardens which use less space and less water to grow vegetables to maturity and we plant fruit trees which will provide more food in the future.
The schools had land for the gardens but they did not have water so we dug wells and built underground and above ground water tanks that allowed them to safely gather and store rainwater for the vegetable gardens. For the schools whose land is not conducive for growing produce. We enlisted the aid of the local farmers who were willing, able and motivated to build the vegetable gardens and sell it to the foundation at a subsidized cost provided we provide the seedlings.
Another hidden benefit of having the children and their parents build and sustain these gardens is that the parents now realize they can get water and build their own gardens at home. So, we are not just giving food to these communities but we are teaching them how to grow their own nutritious food. And now we have FOOD for the children.
Thank you for your help and hopefully you will continue to help us free more children from hunger once and for all. As you can see even a small contribution makes a BIG difference in a child’s life. Let’s continue to empower together. Join Our Cause.
